The four terms that decide everything
1. Game weighting
The single most important line, and the one buried furthest down the page. Slots typically count 100% toward wagering; roulette counts 10% or 20%, and occasionally 0%. At 20%, every $1 you stake on roulette clears 20 cents of the requirement — so the real turnover needed is five times the headline number.
Worked example: a $500 bonus with 40× wagering is nominally $20,000 of turnover. At 20% roulette weighting it becomes $100,000 of actual roulette turnover, carrying an expected loss of $2,700 at 2.70%. You would be spending $2,700 to unlock $500.
2. The wagering basis
"40× the bonus" and "40× bonus plus deposit" differ by a factor of two on a 100% match, and read almost identically. Check which applies before calculating anything else.
3. Maximum bet while the bonus is active
Commonly $5. It does not change the cost, but it fixes the time: $100,000 of turnover in $5 bets is 20,000 spins. At a live table that is several hundred hours. Most people abandon the bonus well before the end, which means paying most of the cost and collecting none of the benefit.
4. The excluded-bets clause
A large number of casinos void bonuses if you cover more than a set share of the roulette table — typically 65–70% of numbers, or simultaneous red and black. Low-risk covering approaches are exactly what those clauses exist to prevent, so the "safe" way to clear a bonus is usually the way that forfeits it.

A shorter version
- Find the roulette weighting. If it is 0%, stop — the offer is not for you.
- Multiply the wagering requirement by
1 ÷ weightingto get real turnover. - Multiply that by the house edge of the table you will play. That is what clearing it costs.
- If the cost exceeds the bonus, decline and play without it. A no-bonus session at 1.35% beats a bonus session at 2.70% with a $100,000 obligation attached.
- Prefer rakeback where it exists. No wagering, pays on losses, no bet cap.
None of this makes roulette profitable. It determines whether a promotion reduces the cost or quietly increases it, and for a roulette player it is more often the latter.

What does game weighting mean?

Can I bet red and black to clear a bonus?
It is usually a terms breach. Most operators void bonuses for covering more than 65–70% of the table or for opposing even-money bets, and forfeiting the bonus is the standard consequence. It is also pointless — the two bets cancel except on zero, where both lose.
Is rakeback better than a welcome bonus?
For roulette specifically, usually yes. Rakeback has no wagering requirement, pays on turnover regardless of outcome, has no maximum-bet restriction, and does not exclude bet patterns. The headline number is smaller and the value is more often real.
What is a fair wagering requirement?
For roulette at 20% weighting, anything above about 20× on the bonus alone is difficult to justify arithmetically. Below 10× with 100% weighting would be genuinely good and is essentially never offered.
Why do bonus terms include a maximum bet?
To stop a player clearing the requirement in a handful of large bets, which would leave the operator exposed to variance rather than the edge. It does not change what clearing costs, but it greatly increases how long it takes — which is why so many bonuses are abandoned part-cleared.
