Covering more of the wheel does not help

The most common intuition in roulette is that covering more numbers improves your position. It does not. Back 30 of 37 pockets with one unit each and you win about 81% of spins β€” and every win returns 36 units against 30 staked, for a profit of 6. The 19% of spins that miss cost 30. Multiply it out and you land on 2.70%, exactly like everything else.

What coverage buys is frequency. Wide boards win often and win small; narrow boards win rarely and win big. The bill is identical, which is why the "edge on this board" figure above never drops below the wheel's own number no matter how you arrange the chips.

One exception, and it is negative. Mixing the American five-number bet into a board raises the average edge above 5.26%, because that bet alone costs 7.89%. Combining bets can make a board worse than the wheel; it can never make it better.
